How to add a user in Google Search Console

Open Settings, then Users and permissions, click Add user, enter their Google account email, choose Owner, Full or Restricted and click Add. About 1 minute. You need to be an Owner of the property.

This is for the person who owns a Search Console property and wants a colleague, an agency or a tool to see its data. You open Users and permissions, click Add user, type their Google account email, pick a permission and click Add. Pick the lowest permission that lets them do the job.

  1. 1

Open Search Console and pick the property

Go to Search Console and choose your property in the selector at the top left of the left menu.

You should see: Your property's name at the top of the left menu.

  2. 2

    Open Users and permissions

In the left menu click Settings, then click Users and permissions.

You should see: A page called Users and permissions, with Add user, Ownership history and Unused ownership tokens.

  3. 3

    Click Add user

Click the blue ADD USER button at the top left.

You should see: A dialog called Add user with an Email address field and a Permission list.

  4. 4

    Enter their email address

Click Email address and type the Google account email of the person. The field reads Enter a valid Google account email until you type.

You should see: The Add button turns from grey to active once the email looks valid.

  5. 5

    Choose a permission

Click the Permission list and choose Owner, Full or Restricted. Full is selected for you. Choose Restricted if they only need to look.

You should see: The list closes showing the permission you chose.

  6. 6

    Click Add

Click ADD. They appear in the Users table with the permission you chose.

You should see: A new row in the Users table with their email and permission.

If it does not work

You cannot find Users and permissions, or Add user does nothing. Only an Owner of the property can add users. Ask an Owner to add the person, or to make you an Owner.

The Add button stays greyed out. The email must be a Google account address. A work address that is not linked to a Google account will not be accepted.

They added someone but that person cannot do something. A Restricted user cannot submit a sitemap. Open Users and permissions and raise them to Full, or ask an Owner to.

Questions

Where do I add a user in Search Console?

In the left menu, click Settings, then Users and permissions. The Add user button is at the top left of that page.

What permissions can I give?

The Permission list in the Add user dialog has three entries, Owner, Full and Restricted. Full is selected by default.

What kind of email address do they need?

A Google account email. The field says Enter a valid Google account email, and Add stays greyed out until you enter one.

Can a Restricted user submit a sitemap?

No. We saw a Restricted user refused with an HTTP 403 when it tried, and the same action worked once the account was a Full user.

What else is on the Users and permissions page?

Next to Add user there are Ownership history and Unused ownership tokens, which showed 0 for us. The list shows each person's name, email and permission.

How we checked

Verified 11 Oct 2026 against the live interface on pinafly.com's own Search Console domain property.

What we observed

  • Settings in the left menu opens Users and permissions, with the buttons Add user, Ownership history and Unused ownership tokens, and a table with the columns Name, Email and Permission.
  • The Add user dialog has an Email address field with the placeholder Enter a valid Google account email, a Permission list set to Full by default, and the buttons Cancel and Add, with Add greyed out until an email is entered.
  • {"The Permission list offers three choices"=>"Owner, Full and Restricted."}
  • A Restricted user was refused with an HTTP 403 when submitting a sitemap through the Search Console API on 7 Oct 2026, and the same call worked once the account was raised to Full.
