How to create a product and price in Stripe and find the price ID
Open the Product catalogue, click Add product, enter a name and a price, choose Recurring or One-off and save. Open the product, find the price in its Pricing section and copy the ID that starts with price_.
This is for a developer or founder setting up what customers pay for, often because a coding agent has written the checkout and now asks for a price_ ID. In Stripe a product is what you sell and a price is how much and how often, so one product can have a monthly and a yearly price. The ID your code needs is the price's, not the product's.
Before you start
You need a Stripe account with the Administrator or Developer role. Decide the amount, the currency and whether it is recurring.

You should see: A test mode or sandbox banner across the top of the dashboard.
-
2
Open the Product catalogue
In the left menu click Product catalogue (it may sit under More, or read Products).
You should see: A list of products, empty if you have none, with an Add product button.
-
3
Click Add product
Click Add product at the top right.
You should see: A panel with Name, Description, Image and a pricing section.

Click Add product at the bottom of the panel.
You should see: The product's page with your price listed under Pricing.
-
7
Copy the price ID
In the Pricing section, open the price (click its row or its menu) and copy the ID that starts with price_.
You should see: A value beginning price_, followed by letters and numbers.
If it does not work
Your app fails with No such price: 'price_...'. The ID is from the other mode or another Stripe account. Check the mode toggle and the API key your app uses, and copy the price from the same mode.
You copied an ID starting with prod_ and Checkout rejects it. That is the product. Open the product and copy the price's ID from the Pricing section instead.
You need to change the amount but there is no edit field. Prices cannot be edited. Click Add another price on the product, use the new price_ ID, and archive the old price.
Tax is added on top when you expected it to be included, or the other way round. Check the price's tax behaviour (Include tax in price) in its advanced options. It cannot be changed once the price has been used, so create a new price if needed.
Questions
What is the difference between prod_ and price_ IDs?
prod_ identifies the product, the thing you sell. price_ identifies one way to pay for it, an amount, currency and interval. Checkout Sessions and subscriptions take the price_ ID.
Where do I find the price ID after creating the product?
Open the product in the Product catalogue. In the Pricing section, click the price row or its menu and copy the ID shown, which starts with price_.
Why does my code say No such price in production?
Test mode and live mode have separate catalogues. A price_ ID made in test mode does not exist in live mode. Create the same product and price in live mode and use that ID there.
Can I change a price's amount later?
No. Prices are fixed once created. Add a new price to the product, switch your code to its ID, and archive the old one. Existing subscriptions keep the old price until you move them.
Should I use a lookup key instead of hard coding the price ID?
It helps. A lookup key such as pro_monthly lets your code fetch the current price without changing when you replace it. You can set it in the price's advanced options.
