How to find your Google Tag Manager container ID
Open your container in Tag Manager. The container ID, which starts GTM- and is shown in blue next to Preview at the top of the workspace, is also in the Overview and on the Admin tab. About 30 seconds.
This is for anyone who has been asked for a Tag Manager container ID, for example by a plugin, a developer or an agency. It looks like GTM-XXXXXXX and is shown in more than one place once you open the container. It is not the same as a Google tag ID such as G-XXXXXXXXXX.
Before you start
You need any access to the container, even Read.

1
Open Tag Manager and your container
Go to Tag Manager and click your account, then your container. If you manage many accounts, the All accounts page lists every container with its ID in the Container ID column.
You should see: The workspace for the container, with its name in the header.
-
2
Read the ID at the top of the workspace
Look at the top bar, to the left of the Preview button. The ID starts with GTM- and is shown in blue.
You should see: A short code starting GTM- next to the Preview and Submit buttons.
-
3
Check it somewhere else if you need to
On the Overview, the Container card shows it under the container's name. On the Admin tab it is in the Container column, beside the container's name.
You should see: The same GTM- code in each place.
If it does not work
You see an ID starting G- or AW- and not GTM-. That is a Google tag ID, from the Google tags card. The container ID is the one starting GTM-, at the top of the workspace.
You cannot see the container you were told about. You may not have access to that account. Ask an Administrator to give you at least Read on the container.
You have several containers and are not sure which is the right one. Use the All accounts page. It lists each container with its type and ID, so you can match the ID you were given.
